What is a VPS?

A VPS (virtual private server) is a virtual server that runs on a powerful physical machine alongside other virtual servers. Each VPS has its own operating system, its own allocated memory and storage, and its own IP address. You get full root access, so you can install and configure whatever software you need.

NivaCity VPS Servers use KVM virtualization. Each server has its own kernel and is isolated from the others on the same machine. Memory and storage are allocated to your server. CPU is shared across the physical machine, as is standard with KVM, and we monitor it closely so no single server can slow down its neighbours.

NivaCity VPS Servers are unmanaged by default. You get root access and full control, and you are responsible for the software you install, updates, security and backups. This suits developers and system administrators who want to set things up their own way.

If you would rather we look after the server, we offer managed packages on a quote basis. We can install a control panel, harden the server and handle ongoing maintenance. Open a support ticket to discuss what you need.

With shared hosting, many websites share one server, and we manage everything for you: the control panel, security, updates and email. It is the simplest and cheapest way to run websites, email and one-click apps.

A VPS is the next step when you need:

  • Root access, to install software that shared hosting does not support
  • Resources allocated to you, for busy sites or heavy database work
  • Your own IP address and configuration, for custom mail servers, game servers, bots or development work

If you mainly need websites and email and do not want to manage a server, shared hosting is usually the better choice. See our hosting plans.

A dedicated server is an entire physical machine used only by you, with nothing shared. It suits heavy, steady workloads and strict isolation requirements.

Dedicated servers from NivaCity are coming soon. Until then, our larger VPS plans handle most heavy workloads. See dedicated servers to be notified when they launch.

When you order a NivaCity VPS, you choose a plan and a Linux distribution. Every plan includes:

  • Full root access
  • KVM virtualization
  • NVMe SSD storage
  • IPv4 and IPv6
  • Console access from your client area

Most servers are ready within an hour of payment. New accounts may need a verification check first.
